Business Suiting

The NonconformistDoes the suit make a man, or the man, a suit? I work in a casual-dress environment, jeans and t-shirts are the norm, people who wear suits are invariably doing interviews. A friend of mine who works in a similar environment has started doing Formal Fridays, where he dresses up in a suit. I find this intriguing, as I’d struggle to work in formal clothes. I’ve had years of uniformed clothing in one form or another. Oh, and I’m far from being a fashionista!

Do you think it matters, in the grand scheme of things? If you were meeting a company for the first time with an eye to investing, would you be blind to the clothes your potential partner was wearing? Would it be a case of, “great idea, but I don’t think you’re serious because you’re wearing a skanky t-shirt and jeans. I don’t want my money resting on immature kids.” Be honest.

Tech companies in Silicon Valley appear to accept a laissez-faire approach when meeting hot young guns with blow-out ideas, how far along the road is Ireland? Ideas > Suiting?

I quite like wearing a shirt and tie, more from a professional “ok I feel like it” rather than I have to.

Very often the pressure to choose great/interesting “casual” clothes is often greater than what tie to wear with a suit.

Uniforms are the way to go :-P

I don’t judge people on whether they wear a suit, but if they do, I notice the quality of the suit.

If they expect me to wear a suit – they’re expecting too much from me…
