Is there room in your pencil case for me?

On Thursday morning, childish things will be put aside for the last time. Well, for someone I love. You see, my sister is starting college. Orientation marks the beginning of a right of passage for her. College is something she will ace. Every challenge that she sets her heart to, she knocks dead.

There is a decade gap between us. In a well-established family order, she was the surprise baby that rocked everyone’s world. For the first six months, her monumental dimples and chocolate eyes slept in my room. She was a good baby; she barely cried at all. Just a peep here and there. Being the youngest, she was able to instill mirth and misery in equal parts. However, one never left without being happy in the end.

Passing the kids on the way to their first day school this week, it’s difficult to avoid identifying strongly with the Moms and Dads bittersweetly depositing their Mini-Mes into education banks.  In a strange kind of way, I’ll be waving her off, virtually at least. It may just be a  text message or a minutes-long IM chat, but the feeling will be the same. “It’s time for another baby”, my mother joked on Sunday morning. I hope she was speaking for herself.

Aww….thanks Lex. There certainly is room in my pencil case since mom is going into the “college” bag. :)

If it helps at all – I’m facing the same truth. My little brother is abandonning Dublin on Thursday to head off to Sligo IT.

He’s living for it. I’m shuddering like a baby at the thought.

[...] since I haven’t actually had any classes yet but that’s beside the point. I read a really great post by Alexia which kinda brought home the fact that even though I may be still living at home and getting free [...]

It’s the same here, everyone’s terrified that the house will fall apart without me.

…maybe it will(not sure if I should add a smiley after that)
