When the smoke clears

Too many words have been written on this election. While I remain a total cynic on some of Obama’s economic policies, the appetite for a change in administration was palpable. What we witnessed last night was a cathartic cry – a letting go. It was needed. If anything, it bookends the last eight appalling years of the Bush administration.

It’ll be interesting to look back in four years time and measure success by the expectations so heavily heaped onto Obama’s shoulders. The really interesting journey begins now. Who will fill out Obama’s team of Secretaries? Where will the balance of power sit? As promising as the first blush of new administration appears, a grey pall is sitting on this victory.

Proposition 8 looks almost certain to pass, with more than 90% of ballots counted the Yes side hold 52% of those votes. California, bellweather of the nation, looks to have voted to ban gay marriage.  California wasn’t alone in canning the hopes of many same-sex couples, Arizona and Florida also approved bans on gay marriage. So, in a country asking for change liberty and the pursuit for happiness for same-sex couples has now gone retrograde? A bittersweet morning for liberals.

    Very well said.

I’m fascinated to see how he holds up under the strain of fixing such a broken country. He does seem to fill most people I know with a lovely sense of hope though, which has been missing all too long.

The result on Prop 8 is so disheartening.
