The real Tuesday Push is pushing Us

Going Up?

So a couple of weeks ago, there was a meta Tuesday Push. Of course, I’m late. But here it is.

The Tuesday Push is a loose collective of bloggers that once a fortnight all blog about the offerings of an Irish startup. The idea behind the push is that it is supposed to generate some buzz on the  company – get the word out on what the startup does.

Pushing comes in all shapes and sizes

The traditional Tuesday Push post mentions a blurb on the company with a graphic. It’s been interesting to compare and contrast how people blog the Push. Ant Galvin has  written  interesting  Tuesday Push posts giving constructive feedback. That’s invaluable for a startup. Would it be interesting if more people did this?

Play with the ideas

Every single one of us has skills. Grandmothers that paint, student music fiends, binmen that play poker. How about we see the Tuesday Push as a challenge? Not to knock the company involved, but to think about how that company does business, what we would do in that business and how we would ramp it up a gear.

Everyone can participate. Say company X is an online art gallery selling artists’ works to the public. A web geek could look at the accessibility of site and suggest ways that X Ltd could improve their site to users with impaired vision. Perhaps, a video enthusiast could sketch out interesting video additions to the site. Someone with SEO experience could give ranking pointers. Joe Bloggs at home could look at why they buy art and if they don’t why not. Could you think of a neat idea to challenge the business norms of X Ltd?

Pushing is Exercise

It’s not about being critical or companies gobbling up free advice and taking advantage of bloggers, it’s about bloggers not only pushing Irish startups but also themselves. Many of have talents. Skills that we love to exercise. Things we like doing and we want to get better at. Maybe one day you’d like to take that skill and make it into a business of your own. Or perhaps you’d just like to help out small businesses.

The Tuesday Push really isn’t about just the companies being pushed. It’s about us trying to push ourselves. If you stop and think for a minute, I’d bet you’d think of a skill you could push with.

I haven’t participated in this for a few reasons.

Firstly, no matter how I wrap it in coloured paper, it still feels like an ad. Or, if not an ad, then certainly an unnatural intrusion into tuppenceworth’s normal service. Cheerleading about a service I wouldn’t use myself just doesn’t make me feel comfortable.

Secondly, while I might do something about an interesting site, I’m not sure that honest opinion is really what’s being looked for. On the rare occasion I have decided that a web service is worth writing about on tuppenceworth (to date, only Feedjournal and ScribbleLive, if I recall correctly) it certainly hasn’t been to lavish them with unalloyed praise.

More to the point, I did actually use them myself.

The best contribution I can imagine myself making to most of the companies I’ve seen is to briefly describe why they don’t seem relevant to me.

And only a Vincent Brown level of ornryness would see a person devote time to writing about things like that.
